Electron Microscopy

Purpose/Principle

Diagnostic electron microscopy provides ultrastructural characterization of the submitted specimen.

Special Collection Notes

Collect specimen according to standard operating procedure.

Tissue biopsies should be immediately fixed in glutaraldehyde. Formalin fixation is acceptable in the absence of glutaraldehyde. For cilia studies, a disposable curette or cytology brush can be placed directly into fixative vial. Hair samples for SEM evaluation may be sent dry in a specimen container.
