Purpose/Principle

This real-time PCR assay is intended for qualitative detection and differentiation of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in cutaneous or mucocutaneous lesion swab specimens and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples collected from patients suspected of herpes simplex virus (HSV).

Special Collection Notes

Collect specimen according to standard operating procedure.

Whole Blood: Purple Top Tube-EDTA

 

CSF and Ocular Fluid: CSF Tube Sterile screw capped container

 

Tissue: Sterile screw capped container

 

Corneal Scrapings: UTM Standard Swab Kit

Specimen Volume

Whole Blood Preferred: 3.0 mL Minimum: 0.8 mL

 

CSF/Ocular Fluid preferred:0.5 mL Minimum : 0.3 mL

Processing Instructions

Store refrigerated and send on wet ice via courier.
If transport time is greater than 24 hours day for CSF, freeze at -20 Celsius and ship on dry ice.
Do not freeze whole blood.
