Test Code LAB10144 Streptococcus Group A PCR
Performing Section
Microbiology
Purpose/Principle
In this assay, DNA extracted from patient samples is subjected to real-time PCR amplification using
primers and a fluorescent probe directed against a target sequence in the Strep A genome (spy1258) (Kodani, et al 2011). The product is detected on an Applied Biosystems 7500 Taqman™ instrument using 5’-nuclease methodology. An exogenous positive control is co-amplified in each reaction to determine extraction efficiency and detect inhibition. Results are reported as Strep A Detected or Not Detected.
Special Collection Notes
Collect specimen according to standard operating procedure.
Tissues, Aspirates, Fluids, and other Sterile Specimens: Collect specimen aseptically into a sterile specimen container.
Collect an aerobic culture swab using a COPAN ESwab. DO NOT collect with MRSA swab. Throat swabs are NOT acceptable.
